Duodenal switch or Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
Technique
Stomach is partially resected
Ileum is attached to the pyloric sphincter (duodenum and jejunum are completely bypassed)
The bypassed small bowel (duodenum and jejunum) is attached to the ileum to create a 75-100cms common loop
Advantages
This leads to 70 to 80% of excess weight loss in the two years that follow the procedure.
Lasting results
Lifestyle changes are not as crucial as with restrictive procedures because of malabsorption.
Disadvantages
Much higher risk for nutritional deficiencies- Nutritional supplements, including vitamins and minerals, will be necessary for the lifetime of the patient.
